The questions to put to any supplier before you order barrier gates, rising bollards, road blockers or a parking access control system. Use it as your RFQ template and compare suppliers on the same lines.
This is a question list, not a specification. It contains no prices and no performance claims from us — you fill in the answers you receive.
What this checklist is — and what it is not
Suppliers quote quickly; the expensive mistakes happen in what was never asked. This file is the question list, so the gaps show up before the purchase order, not during commissioning.
- It is a question list: every line is something to confirm with the supplier you are evaluating, in writing.
- It is not a specification: no dimensions, no performance figures and no prices are stated as ours.
- It is a comparison sheet: the same questions are asked of every supplier, so the answers sit side by side.
- It is project neutral: use it for one barrier gate on a car park entrance or for a multi-lane access control package.
What the checklist asks you to confirm
Six groups, in the order a project usually fails: the mechanism, the bollards, the integration, the site, the paperwork, and the support after hand-over.
1. Barrier gate hardware and duty cycle
- What boom arm length and diameter does the lane width require, and does the arm need to be straight, folding or a fence-type arm?
- Which drive is proposed — AC, brushless DC or servo — and what opening and closing time is guaranteed for that drive?
- What duty cycle is the mechanism rated for, and how many operating cycles are expected before a major service?
- What material and surface treatment are used for the cabinet, and are they suitable for coastal or high-humidity sites?
- What ingress protection rating applies to the housing, the drive and the controller?
- What wind load class do the cabinet and arm hold, and is a wind release function included?
- Which safety devices are included as standard — inductive loops, infrared photocells, obstacle detection, arm bumper?
- Is manual release supplied for power failure, and is battery or UPS backup available?
- What is the emergency procedure if the mechanism jams while an ambulance or fire truck needs the lane?
2. Rising bollards and road blockers
- Which bollard diameter and height options exist, and which of them matches the vehicle class using the site?
- What is the stroke time of the proposed bollard, and what duty cycle applies to continuous operation?
- What foundation, drainage and cabling works must my civil contractor provide, and are the drawings supplied with the quotation?
- Can the bollard be lowered during a power failure, and how is that done?
- Are reflective bands, LED rings or audible warnings available on the bollard head?
- For a road blocker: is it road-level or surface-mounted, and what vehicle load must the foundation be designed for?
- How is water ingress and silt handled in the bollard pit, and who maintains the drainage?
3. Access control integration
- Which interfaces does the controller expose — dry contacts, relay outputs, Wiegand, RS485, TCP/IP?
- Can the gate be triggered from loop detectors, RFID readers, ticket dispensers, LPR cameras and intercoms, and are those interfaces built in or added by option boards?
- Does the LPR platform run locally or in the cloud, how is it licensed per lane and per camera, and what happens when the internet link drops?
- Can the system run offline on a local whitelist and synchronise later?
- Which parking management or building management software does it integrate with, and is an API or SDK provided?
- Can barriers, bollards, turnstiles and pedestrian gates share one controller and one software platform?
- How are vehicle records, plate data and entry logs stored, and who owns that data?
4. Site, power and installation conditions
- What lane width, island width and cabinet footprint must the site allow?
- What power supply is required — voltage, phases, current — and what cable sizes and cable runs are acceptable?
- What ambient temperature, humidity and wind conditions is the equipment rated for at this location?
- What approach and exit distance is needed for reliable plate capture on the LPR lanes?
- Which installation works are the responsibility of my contractor and which are the supplier's?
- What installation, commissioning and training are included, and can commissioning be supported remotely?
- What site survey information does the supplier need from me before the layout drawing is issued?
5. Commercial, documentation and compliance
- Which certificates, test reports and declarations can be provided for this exact model, and in whose name are they issued?
- On request, can the supplier confirm the HS code, packing dimensions and weights per unit and per container?
- What is the minimum order quantity, and what is the policy for a mixed container?
- Which spare parts are recommended to keep on site for the first year, with part numbers?
- What is the lead time for this configuration, and what is the lead time for repeat orders?
- Which Incoterms, payment terms and warranty terms apply to this quotation?
- Are operation manuals, wiring diagrams and spare-parts lists supplied in my language?
- Who is the legal entity that issues the warranty, and is it the same entity that signs the contract?
6. After-sales and lifetime support
- Who handles technical support in my time zone, and through which channel?
- What spare-part availability is committed for this model over its service life?
- Are board-level spares and firmware updates available, and under what terms?
- What is the response procedure if one lane of a multi-lane site fails at peak hour?
- Can the supplier name comparable projects of the same size and site type for reference?
- What training do my technicians receive, and is it on site, at the factory or online?

Does the checklist contain prices?
No. It contains questions only. Prices depend on the configuration, quantity and destination, so they are quoted per project after the questions are answered.
Does it state your product performance figures?
No. Every line is a question to put to a supplier, including us. We do not publish performance numbers on this page; you collect them in writing from the suppliers you compare.
Why do you ask for my email address?
