If you are planning a vehicle entry point, a boom barrier (also called an arm barrier or barrier gate) and a rising bollard are the two options most people weigh first. The mistake is treating them as interchangeable: they solve two different problems.
A boom barrier is an access-control device. Its arm rises and falls to manage who passes through a lane, using a remote, RFID fob, card reader, license plate camera or a guard. It is built for fast, high-volume traffic — and its arm is designed to break away on impact so a vehicle that drives into it damages the arm rather than the motor. It visually deters and gates entry; it is not a barrier that physically stops a determined vehicle.
A rising bollard is a physical barrier. A sturdy post rises from the ground to block the lane and retracts flush to allow a vehicle through. Because it is a solid structure that will stop a vehicle, it is the choice for anti-ram and anti-terrorism protection — a boom arm cannot do that.
So the question is not “which is better” but “what problem am I solving?” Get that right first and the rest follows.
A boom barrier is an electric gate operator with a horizontal arm, typically 3–6 m long, that pivots up and down. The motor, gearbox and balancing spring are housed in a small cabinet beside the lane, so the footprint is compact.
A rising bollard is a cylinders-shaped post that rises hydraulically or electromechanically from the ground to block the lane and lowers flush to allow passage. Because it is a physical structure, it provides impact protection, not just gating.

On high-security sites the two are not competitors — they are used together. A common layout is crash-rated bollards on the outer line to stop a ramming vehicle before it reaches the checkpoint, and a boom barrier on the inner lane to manage cards, remotes or LPR for authorised vehicles.
