Speed gates (also called flap barriers) use motor-driven swing or flap panels that open on authorized access, closing automatically after each pass. Turnstiles use rotating arms (tripod, full-height, or optical) that physically rotate with each person. Both control pedestrian access, but they serve different priorities: speed gates maximize throughput and aesthetics, while turnstiles maximize security and one-person-at-a-time enforcement.
Speed gates are the fastest pedestrian lane solution available: with opening speeds as low as 0.3 seconds, they pass 40–60 people per minute per lane. The flap panels are nearly invisible at rest, which suits lobbies with design standards. Turnstiles are slower (20–40 people per minute) and the mechanical arms are more obtrusive, but they are simpler and very reliable in heavy public use.
For office buildings, speed gate lanes integrated with access control terminals create a premium, fast-moving entrance experience. For transit stations and stadiums, full-height or tripod turnstiles are the workhorses that survive constant abuse.
If tailgating prevention is critical (e.g., data centers, R&D buildings), optical sensors with anti-tailgating logic are the key feature to look for in either form factor.
