A solar-powered barrier gate (also called a solar boom barrier or solar boom gate) is an automatic vehicle access control system that runs entirely on solar energy ?no grid power connection required. It combines photovoltaic solar panels, a maintenance-free battery bank, and a DC brushless motor into a self-contained, off-grid access control solution.
These systems are ideal for remote locations where trenching electrical cables is prohibitively expensive or impossible: rural highway toll points, construction sites, farms, border checkpoints, and temporary event parking.
Unlike traditional AC-powered barrier gates that cost thousands in civil works to lay underground cables, a solar barrier gate can be deployed on a simple concrete pad or even a mobile trailer ?fully operational within hours of delivery.
Using our T02 Solar-Powered Barrier Gate as a reference model:
| Parameter | Value |
| Solar Array | 3 × 36W main panels + 1 × 10W top panel = 118W total |
| Battery Capacity | 156 Ah / 577.6 Wh |
| Motor Type | 24V DC Brushless, 100W rated |
| Cycles per Full Charge | 12,000+ lift/lower cycles |
| Housing Dimensions | 340 (W) × 310 (D) × 1050 (H) mm |
| Arm Length Options | 3m, 4m, 5m, 6m (straight / folding / fence) |
| Opening / Closing Time | 1.5 – 6 s (adjustable) |
| Protection Grade | IP54 |
| Operating Temperature | -20°C to +60°C |
| Lifetime | > 5 million cycles |
For a typical single-lane installation at a parking lot or toll point:
| Cost Item | Grid-Powered AC Barrier | Solar-Powered DC Barrier |
| Barrier Gate Hardware | $400 – $800 | $800 – $1,500 |
| Civil Works (trenching, cabling, conduit) | $500 – $2,000 | $0 |
| Electrical Engineering / Permits | $300 – $800 | $0 |
| Annual Electricity Cost | $50 – $120 | $0 |
| Year 1 Total | $1,250 – $3,720 | $800 – $1,500 |
| 5-Year Total | $1,500 – $4,320 | $800 – $1,500 |
Note: Costs are estimates for comparison purposes. Actual costs vary by region and site conditions.
Our T02 model handles up to 12,000 cycles on a full charge. At 500 cycles/day (a very busy parking lot), that's 24 days of autonomy without any solar charging. With daily solar recharging, the system runs indefinitely.
Solar panels still generate power in overcast conditions (typically 10-25% of rated output). The high-capacity battery bank (156Ah on T02) provides multi-day autonomy buffer. For regions with extended low-sun seasons, we can configure larger panels or dual battery banks.
Yes. Solar barrier gates use the same control interfaces (relay, RS485, loop detector inputs) as grid-powered models. They integrate seamlessly with license plate recognition cameras, RFID readers, and parking management software. See our LPR integration guide.
Yes. The T02 operates in temperatures from -20°C to +60°C. The battery bank uses low-temperature-optimized cells. In extreme cold regions, we recommend an insulated battery enclosure as an add-on.
